At the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas,Khan headlined the show against Marcos Maidana on that night, with the card being aired live by HBO’s World Championship Boxing in the US and Sky Box Office here in the UK.

Champion Amir Khan has refused to rule out an all British super fight with Ricky Hatton.

Bolton's Khan told that a fight against his local rival would make "business sense".

However, Hatton has not boxed since losing to Manny Pacquiao in June 2009 so it remains unprobably that in the near future any fight will happen.

"I'm not sure if Ricky has retired but if the fight did happen it would be huge," Khan said.

Khan was struck by the illness shortly after returning from South Africa where he had watched England bow out of the World Cup to Germany in the last 16.
But Khan's father Shah has insisted the world light welterweight champion was in fine form and stepping up preparations for his next fight after beating Paulie Malignaggi in New York in May.

Amir Khan want to fight the winner of the lightweight clash between WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz on July 31st, but it now looks like Khan wants that fight to take place in his home country of England. That obviously would give Khan a huge advantage. In size Khan would already have a big advantage, reach, height, youth and hand speed over the two small lightweights.
But when you add in that Khan would be fighting in front of a home crowd, it would likely be asking a lot of either the soon to be 37 year old Marquez and/or Diaz to be able to win a decision over there with all those advantages that Khan would have. We already saw Khan beat 36 year old lightweight Marco Antonio Barrera last year in Manchester, England, in a fight where Barrera sustained a terrible gash on his forehead from a 1st round headbutt.
Instead of stopping the fight and ruling it a no contest, the bout was allowed to go on until the 5th round, when it was finally stopped due to the blood that was pouring into Barrera’s eyes, preventing him from seeing properly. It was the same got, no worse than before, that had originally opened in the 1st round.
“I’m looking at fighting in Vegas or England,” Khan said in an article at Thesun.co.uk. “I want to fight the winner of the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz bout. That is very much on the cards.” Why should a great fighter like Marquez have to move up in weight, and then travel all the way to England to fight someone like Khan, who has only a handful of experience at the pro level against top tier opponents?
Shouldn’t Khan be fighting someone in his own weight division, preferably WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) or Devon Alexander? Why not either of those guys? Why not Timothy Bradley or Victor Ortiz. I’d much rather see Khan face those guys than dragging an old lightweight halfway across the world to fight him in front of Khan’s home audience. What makes it even more off putting is that Marquez has been a great fighter for over a decade now,winning three titles in the featherweight division, another title in the super featherweight division and finally two titles at lightweight.
Whereas Khan hasn’t even taken on the best fighters in his own division, and is looking to fight lightweights instead. By going after lightweights, it looks by appearances, like Khan, or his promoters, is cherry picking beatable opponents in order to make a name the easy way. I wouldn’t mind Khan dragging one of the top light welterweights all the way to England, if they were willing to go along with it, or Breidis Prescott. But to take on an old Marquez or a fighter like Diaz, who has lost three out of his last five fights, it just looks bad.
Khan said he wants to be a star in the U.S., yet he’s looking to fight older lightweights in England. He already took on the light hitting Paulie Malignaggi in his last fight in May instead of taking on the slugger Maidana. Supposedly, Khan was then going to start fighting the big names in the light welterweight division. What we’re getting instead is Khan looking to fight a lightweight at home.

Amir Khan is still only 23, but is quickly making a name for himself in world boxing.
When he was just 17 years old an Olympic medal winner, Khan currently boxed his first bout in the U.S. defeating Pauli Malignaggi in New York in May, retaining his WBA World Light Welterweight belt.
British Muslim of Pakistani heritage as a young, Khan has also become something of a poster boy for multiculturalism in the UK.
While he enthusiastically encompass his task as a role model for young people, he is as dedicated to his craft as he is to his faith.
He said, "I think having that religion and faith takes you to a different level, totally".
"I love being a role model and being this young, British Muslim fighter. It's a good title for me."
His personal goal to becoming one of the greatest ever boxers is perhaps just as large as his task in dismissing negative stereotypes of Muslims.
"With the terrorist (attacks) since 9/11 the Muslims need people like me to say 'look we're not all like this' and there are a lot more good Muslims in the world than bad. That's what I like to promote."

Amir Khan won’t be fighting in July, but could be facing Marquez next

However, because the fight will conflict with the world cup competition, promotional company Amir Khan’s , Golden Boy Promotions, want Amir Khan to fight in November instead. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy, is hoping to put Amir Khan in with Juan Manuel Marquez or the perhaps Juan Diaz, if he beats Marquez in their fight next month on July 31st.
Schaefer is also interested in matching Amir Khan with WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana, although the interest in that fight seems to be less than the Marquez fight. That’s understandable. Maidana is a young, powerful knockout puncher who is a legitimate light welterweight and not an undersized lightweight like the 36 year old Marquez.
Maidana would have a very actual chance of knocking Khan out if he was to be matched against Khan, which is likely why he has been skipped over previously. In contrast, Marquez is more of a featherweight, who has moved up in weight in the late states of his career currently to lightweight. He doesn’t look nearly as good at that weight as he did at featherweight and super featherweight.
To ask Marquez to then come up in weight another division to face the much taller and faster Amir Khan would be a huge advantage for Amir Khan. It might not even be a fair fight because of the size advantage that Amir Khan would have.
Incredibly, Schaefer was planning on ,making Khan’s July fight a pay-per-view bout, which is kind of shocking given that Khan has only fought once in the United States, beating the weak-punching Paulie Malignaggi. I think a fight with Khan as the headliner would do incredibly poor unless he was matched against a known star and I doubt Marquez would be enough of a star to make up for Khan’s still unknown status with casual boxing fans.
A bout between Khan and Casamayor would have probably been totally ignored by boxing fans on PPV, at least in the U.S. It might do well in England, but it would be asking a lot of fans to have to pay to see him fight the 38 year old Casamayor, who hasn’t been all that active since being stopped by Marquez two years ago and who has fought most of his career until currently at the lower weights.
It’s disappointing that Khan is being steered into fights against smaller fighters rather than ones from his own weight class. Khan may build up a name by fighting the smaller guys and avoid getting knocked out again, but he could be badly exposed again when they finally do put him in with a good fighter from his own weight class, whenever that happens.
On Khan’s Twitter page, Khan said “Guys, Casamayor is one of four names, but if the fight did happen, and we get the date, don’t be surprised if it isn’t him. I have another name in the bag.” I can only assume that the other name is Marquez, since if it was Maidana, Khan would instantly start talking about it.
Again, I don’t think Khan’s management is going to get him anywhere near Maidana anytime soon, if ever. The guy hits too hard and smothers his opponents with his pressure. He gets in close and batters his opponents into submission.
Khan has no inside game whatsoever and would be a sitting duck for Maidana. Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, needs to try and teach him how to fight on the inside instead of just how to stick and move because Maidana will likely nullify Khan’s movement almost instantly and knock him cold in a round or two.

David Haye Needs To Learn From Amir Khan

About a month ago, current WBA heavyweight champ David Haye beat former heavyweight champ John Ruiz in a fight that had boxing fans around the world on the edge of boredom and indifference.

A couple of weeks before that, IBF and WBO heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko put the world to sleep for 11 rounds before dispatching the world's fourth rated heavyweight into the night in round 12.

This Saturday, WBC title holder Vitali Klitschko will fight Albert Sosnowski in a fight that will make headlines in Bavaria, Frankfort, and parts of Mongolia.

Afterwards, Klitschko says he and his brother both want to fight David Haye. Hopefully, he's talking about separate bouts.

This is the current state of the heavyweight division.

These three competitors realize that the heavyweight division is at its nadir. All three of these guys know they need to start working as hard on promotion as they do on their well toned bodies.

But considering that Vitali will perform in front of 50,000 adoring German fans like his brother did two months ago, and Haye regularly fills the 20,000 capacity M.E.N. Arena in Manchester and the Q2 in London, they might not understand why they need to care about the rest of the world.

It's hard to see the six billion person forest when 50,000 trees are blocking your view.

In the case of the Klitschko brothers, I actually think they're correct in continuing on their current paths.

It's probably too late for them to try and win over the rest of the world, and they don't really need to do so. They're in the twilight of their careers, they've made millions, and they're national heroes in both their native Ukraine and in Germany where they currently reside.

David Haye, on the other hand, is a young fighter with an exciting style.

Does he really want to be the heavyweight version of Joe Calzaghe? Calzaghe is a great fighter who didn't make the truly big money until late in his career and he still has a hard time getting a decent table outside of Wales.

If I was Haye, I would take a look at what Amir Khan has done. Find a way to switch to an American promoter (Golden Boy or Goossen-Tutor would be good fits) and start fighting in the states.

I would fight a couple of top 10 contenders in Vegas or at Staples Arena in LA and get people excited. Then he could fight Vitali Klitschko in a year or so when the aging Klitschko will probably be beatable.

That could set up the heavyweight division's first mega-fight in years: a showdown between a Wladimir and and the man who slayed his brother.

I know, I know. That's a lot of ifs. Either way, Haye would be better off showing off his exciting style in the US instead of in Europe.

The fact is, the US may have lost some of its luster after the banking crisis and our difficulties in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But make no mistake. The good old US of A is still the major league when it comes to boxing. The USA is the Alpha, the Omega, and everything in between.

Manny Pacquiao wouldn't have become an international sensation if he hadn't come to the US to fight and train. Ricky Hatton is a bigger draw as a twice beaten former champ after fighting in the US than he ever would have been as an undefeated fighter in Great Britain.

That's why David Haye would be smart to make the move now while he's still young.

It would be good for Haye and good for boxing. He could light a fire in the moribund heavyweight division and that translates to a wider audience for boxing as a whole.

If not, he can continue to fight in Europe and wonder why he doesn't get the respect he thinks he deserves.

Or he can fight the Klitschkos in Germany and get jabbed into oblivion in front of their hometown crowd and judges.

No limits for Amir Khan after Garden party

Amir Khan is right on two counts: Kevin Mitchell can come back and getting the opponent right is the priority for Khan's next engagement.

I continue to be surprised by Khan, who put Paulie Malignaggi to bed at Madison Square Garden in a way that I least thought possible.

Khan prospered through classy attrition, wearing down Malignaggi before stopping him late on, something I thought beyond his style book.

He is improving so much in every direction that I believe light-welterweight is not the limit. He has the stature and the range to move up to welterweight, and maybe beyond.

That's for the future.

Right now he needs to continue to establish himself at 140lbs, that means a bout in July in England against the right opponent.

I wouldn't like to risk him against Devon Alexander or Timothy Bradley. Neither would I invite Michael Katsidis to jump up from lightweight.

Khan has already been accused of fighting smaller men in the early part of his career. Katsidis was terrific last week against Mitchell (above), but is not the right opponent for Khan.

The time is right to tie up Marcos Maidana, a dangerous puncher but crude. What I love about Khan is his work ethic, his pace, his strength and intensity.

In all those facets of preparation he is right up there with his Wild Card stablemate Manny Pacquiao. Experience is the only attribute missing, hence my caution.

Preview: British standout Amir Khan will make his second defense of his title in NYC against hometown fighter Paulie Malignaggi on May 15 on HBO. Both men look to make a big splash at 140 lbs. with a win here. Khan, making his first appearance outside the U.K., draws a tricky opponent in the quick Malignaggi.
Amir Khan, a silver medallist in the 2004 Olympics as a 17-year old, was forecasted as the next big thing out of England. But as he moved up through the pro ranks, a chink his armor manifested: his chin. Rattled and dropped by entry-level opposition, there were some concerns about the talented Khan’s durability. These suspicions were confirmed when Khan was shockingly stopped in 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott. A right hand from the power-punching Colombian crumpled Khan and it appeared to be a long road back.
Perhaps the boxing community jumped the gun in writing off Khan. While certainly operating with a deficit in the chin department, a first-round knockout can often be a case of a fighter who has not steeled himself for the task at hand. Perhaps Khan was just complacent against the previously unheard-of Prescott. Khan has managed to get a measure of respect back by subsequently defeating Marco Antonio Barrera, Andriy Kotelnik, and Dmitriy Salita. The win over the capable Kotelnik was for a belt and his first-round knockout over Salita was encouraging for those hoping to see Khan make a run at superstardom.
Malignaggi is a fighter who relies on his skills and smarts. With 5 knockouts in 30 fights, he is not much of a puncher, but his confidence and craft bridge the gap. He is reminiscent of old-time boxers—those who had little power and relied on cageyness and cunning to prevail. He has come up short in some of his bigger fights, with losses to Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton, and Juan Diaz in a disputed decision. Since working with his new trainer, Sharif Youman, Malignaggi appears to have recaptured his form, as evidenced by his last fight, a clear decision over Diaz in a rematch.
Malignaggi is in a tough spot here, fighting an opponent who can match him in speed, while surpassing him in the power category. Khan’s main weakness, his chin, will likely not be tested against the light-hitting Malignaggi. Khan is also a little longer than Malignaggi and should be able to operate at a distance. Having passed on hard-hitting Marcos Maidana as an opponent, this is a calculated risk by Team Khan. They wanted to make a splash in the U.S. against an opponent they should beat and they chose Malignaggi. Khan appears to have brought his game to the next level since working with Freddie Roach, who is also Manny Pacquiao’s trainer. Roach is expert at getting fighters to take on a style that minimizes risk, while showcasing their talents.
Prediction: Malignaggi can potentially beat Khan by adhering to an ultra-cute style of boxing that Khan is not educated enough to deal with. I think Paulie is the more intelligent fighter. I expect him to give Khan a difficult and frustrating evening. While there is a chance that Khan will be tied up in knots in a state of mental anguish, I think he will be able to get his offense untracked. As the bout wears on, he will begin to turn the fight in his favor with his greater explosiveness and athleticism.
I am beginning to think Paulie is special enough to produce a great effort and the closer we get to fight night, the more I like his chances. I think he will enjoy fighting in his hometown and who really knows what heights he can rise to? He did manage to make the capable Diaz look rather impotent. I feel that Khan, however, is a thoroughbred, albeit a vulnerable one. I look for him to nose ahead a decision winner in a competitive fight.

The Fight -Marcos Rene Maidana vs Amir Khan

We'll know a lot more after May 15th, the date of Amir Khan Vs. Malignaggi. If Khan wins with ease, his confidence and fighter's pride might make him opt to look in Maidana's direction once more. If, however, the relatively light-hitting "Magic Man" either defeats Khan or gives him trouble, hurts him and gives him real headaches in the fight, Maidana - or any fighter so dangerous for that matter - will surely be ignored by Team-Khan when it comes to Amir's next fight.

Let's let Khan get his U.S/Golden Boy debut out of the way first, and then begin asking/ demanding that he face Maidana. Of course, all will not be lost for "El Chino" if he is avoided by Khan forever; what with there being a number of exciting-looking and attractive match-ups that can be made for him in the currently talent-rich 140-pound weight class. Maidana Vs. Devon Alexander would be great, as would Maidana against either Timothy Bradley or Malignaggi, if the New Yorker does manage to take Khan's belt in May.

The fight that continues to really interest, though, is Maidana against the man from Bolton, U.K.

Amir Khan’s opponent for his American debut is expected to be confirmed in the next 72 hours as Mexican Juan Manuel Márquez, according to Richard Schaefer, CEO of Oscar de le Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Dates and venues are still under discussion, but Las Vegas on May 15 has been pencilled in. All that is required now is the signature of of the boxers before Khan enters the toughest challenge of his career to date, against a proven world class boxer and thinker in the ring.
Márquez the current World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organisation lightweight champion, who, at 36, is thirteen years Khan’s senior, would step up a weight to meet the British fighter at light-welterweight for this contest. The Bolton boxer will earn in the region of £5 million.

Indeed, Khan’s WBA light-welterweight title, won last summer, may be taken from him for his inaugural contest on American soil, if the WBA take umbrage that he failed to meet the mandatory challenger, Marcus Maidana, of Argentina. That said, Golden Boy and the WBA may come to a compromise.

"We have made an offer to Márquez, who is thinking about it, and hopefully we will find out in the coming days," said Schaefer, confirming Las Vegas and the MGM Grand as the likely venue.
“A fight against Márquez is a breakthrough as he is one of the best and Mexico's No 1 active fighter. Once he wins against Márquez there is the possibility of a fight against Zab Judah - and then Mayweather Jnr,” he added.

The popularity of Amir Khan could have been dented by a growing rivalry with Ricky Hatton, Frank Warren, Khan’s promoter, believes.
Khan, one of only two British world champions, makes the first defence of his WBA light-welterweight title, a belt Hatton once held, against Dmitriy Salita at the Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle, on December 5.
But the former Olympic silver medal-winner, 22, has been getting mixed receptions since his one-round loss to Breidis Prescott last year and Warren believes those who have booed Khan could have done it more out of loyalty to Hatton than as a backlash against Khan.
“There have been some boos, but I think that could be to do with the Hatton thing,” Warren said. “We’ve been popular wherever we have been with him. Ticket sales have been good in Newcastle, we have sold 7,000 of the 10,000 tickets already.”
Warren has been keen to play down the possibility of a match between Khan and Hatton, insisting that the Mancunian should retire after his two-round knockout defeat by Manny Pacquiao last May. Hatton says that he has not made up his mind about whether he will return, although the prospect of should he face Khan or not — the two are friends — is unlikely to be keeping him up at nights.
“We’ve always tried to play down the hype surrounding Amir and when people were talking about world titles, I was saying he had to learn,” Warren said. “The Prescott fight was just a bad match, I shouldn’t have made it, but the trainer wanted it and the connections wanted it. It was a big mistake.
“But how he has come back to win a world title eight months and three fights later is exceptional. That sort of thing hasn’t been done by a British boxer and people forget how few fights [22] he has had in his career.”
Khan has been reunited with Freddie Roach, his American coach, this week after Roach missed the first few weeks of Khan’s training camp in Los Angeles as he was training Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines. Warren believes the United States move, made after the Prescott loss, has been a huge benefit for Khan.
“One of the things it did was get him out of Bolton, where he was being pulled every which way by his mates and the personal appearances he was making,” Warren said. “Now he can just concentrate on what he does best, which is boxing.
“And he’s listened to Freddie. He has stopped dropping his hands, jumping in like he used to do and fighting with his heart. The improvement is there for all to see.”
Salita is a New Yorker who was born in Ukraine and Warren believes he will present a stern challenge. “It’s a tough defence and I think it will make for an exciting fight,” Warren said. “But I fancy Amir to knock him out.”

Amir Khan's next opponent, at the Newcastle Metro Radio Arena on 5 December, is the unbeaten American Dmitriy Salita, who boxes out of an orthodox stance in more ways than one.
Salita is an Orthodox Jew who observes the disciplines of his religion so strictly there are 70 religious holidays on which he refuses to box. He also will not fight on the Sabbath which runs from Friday night until darkness on Saturday and said once, "Anyone who wants a good whuppin' from me is going to have to wait until sundown."
There should be no such scheduling problems in Newcastle, although the fight will be a serious test for Khan. "This is a very tough fight for him," Khan's promoter, Frank Warren, said, "and he's taking on a fighter that the American media are actually building up at the moment."
Salita's rise as a professional has revived interest among the Jewish community in his adopted New York, which for so long was a dominant force in the sport.
His clash with Khan, the WBA light welterweight champion and a practising Muslim, brings together not just old and new traditions in boxing but two faiths that have divided peoples and nations. Both boxers are exemplars of tolerance, a theme that no doubt Warren will be keen to stress in the lead up to the fight. Naseem Hamed's reign as world champion inspired Khan to such an extent he won an Olympic silver medal at 17 after losing to the finest amateur of his era, the Cuban Mario Kindelán. This is Khan's first defence of the 10 stone title he won by beating Andreas Kotelnik in July.
Salita was born Dmitriy Lekhtman in Odessa 27 years ago and came to the United States with his parents aged nine to escape growing antisemitism in Ukraine. He was inspired as a boy by videos of Mike Tyson and was simultaneously attracted to boxing and the tough demands of his religion. When he took up the sport in Brooklyn at 13, he used his mother's maiden name, Salita even though she originally objected to his fighting.
Salita, a brilliant amateur, turned pro at 19 and only a draw mars his 31 fight professional record. An aggressive, two-fisted fighter, he has stopped 16 opponents.
However, he was not at his best when he fought on the undercard of Joe Calazaghe's win over Roy Jones Jr at Madison Square Garden in November. Salita's points win over Derrick Campos and a subsequent victory against Raúl Muñoz were enough to make him Khan's mandatory opponent.

John Murray stops to regain British lightweight title Jon Thaxton

John Murray regained the vacant British lightweight title which he was stripped of in June after being over the 9st 9lbs weight limit on the scales with a fourth round stoppage of veteran Jon Thaxton in Altrincham on Saturday night.

Referee Howard Foster stopped the fight after 35 year old Thaxton had been staggered by an arcing right hand. Thaxton remonstrated with the referee, but Murray looked dominant throughout, extending his winning professional streak to 28 fights.
Murray began cagily in the first round, but staggered Thaxton in the second round and dominated the third with crisp jabs, and hooks, and his guard held high.

Thaxton watchked to land power punches but Murray was too young, too fresh, and finally too ambitious for the Norfolk man.
He said: "I could have gone onI felt, I wasn't hurt, it was no way for a British title fight to be stopped."
Murray, meanwhile, insisted afterwards that his ambitions now lie at European and world level, with Amir Khan on his big term radar.
Freddie Roach, Khan’s trainer, suggested during the summer that Murray was a possible opponent for Khan in December 2009, although that has been denied by promoter Frank Warren.
Murray is likely to go on now to a European title challenge against Anthony Mezaache, the Frenchman who took the European title from Thaxton in February.

Olympic mission to Amir Khan joins party conference

BOXER Amir Khan is being asked to help inspire the country’s next generation of sportsmen and women ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.
The Bolton fighter, a silver medallist at the 2004 Athens Olympics in 2004, will join gold medal winner Dame Kelly Holmes at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton today.
The pair were invited to attend by Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and were due to meet 15 sporting youngsters on the platform this afternoon to look forward to and lend their support to London 2012.
Amir’s agent Asif Vali said: “Amir was honoured to be invited to support the London 2012 Olympic Games and meet young people and inspire them to go on to compete.”
Mr Vali distressed the move was nothing to do with politics, but to promote the Games and meet the young sporting hopefuls.
Amir won the silver medal in Athens in 2004 when he was relatively unknown, and he became a national hero. He has since gone on to make a name for himself in the world of professional boxing.
The boxer still devotes his time to supporting and helping young people. He has been and ambassador for various children’s arrangment and charities, including the Lancashire Association of Clubs for Young People, to encourage young people to visit their local youth clubs, UNICEF and also the NSPCC.
Amir invested £700,000 to open a gym in Halliwell to help youngsters take up boxing and keep fit. It has been used by schools in a bid to raise children’s grades.
Mr Vali said: “Amir competed in the Olympics and has gone on to become a World Champion.
“He needs to inspire the next Olympic hopefuls and tell them what taking part in the Olympics means as he and Kelly Holmes are of past Olympics.”
Athlete Kelly Holmes specialised in the 800m and 1500m events, winning won a gold medal for both distances in Athens.
The date of Amir’s next fight, when he will be defending his WBA light-welterweight title, is expected to be announced this week.

CELLARHEAD boxer Scott Lawton has paid tribute to Irish star Darren Sutherland, who has tragically died just a few months after wowing Potteries' fight fans.
Sutherland, aged 27, was found hanged in his London flat by promoter Frank Maloney on Monday.
He shot to prominence after winning a bronze medal for Ireland at last year's Beijing Olympics, and appeared to have a bright professional career leading of him.
Unbeaten in his first four bouts in the paid ranks, the Dubliner fought his penultimate fight at Fenton Manor Sports Complex in May when he stopped Georgia's Vepkhia Tchilaia in four rounds.
Top of the bill that night was Fenton brawler Chris Edwards who defended his British and Commonwealth Flyweight titles against Usman Ahmed.
Lawton's Fentos based Impact gym helped promote the event alongside Maloney.
He said: "I spoke to Darren for 20 minutes at the weigh in before his Fenton Manor fight and he was a smashing lad who was actually down to earth.
"A lot of fighters have an edge about them, but that wasn't the case with Darren. Out of everybody who went to the last Olympics he was the biggest prospect and would have gone the furthest in the professional ranks in my opinion."
"He lost to James De Gale, but he had beaten a few times before that."
Sutherland, a double European Union amateur champion, missed out on gold in Beijing following his semi final defeat by James DeGale.
British fighter DeGale went on to claim gold, but lost four out of six amateur fights with the Irishman.
DeGale was one of three members, from Britain's seven man Olympic team, who medalled in Beijing.
Super heavyweight David Price and light heavyweight Tony Jeffries scooped bronzes all three have since turned pro.
Meanwhile, Lawton is keen to return to action following his unsuccessful tilt at the British lightweight crown in June, when he suffered a sixth round stoppage by John Murray.
The 32 year old is planning to step down to the super featherweight (130lb) category to mount another bid for a major belt.
He has antecedently failed to wrestle the British and Commonwealth titles from Jon Thaxton and Amir Khan respectively.
Lawton signalled his intentions in the past fortnight by surrendering his English lightweight title.
Top of his agenda is securing a clash with Mancunian fighter Michael Brodie, who has made unsuccessful tilts for the WBC and WBO featherweight belts.
However, earlier in his career he did pick up the lesser recognised WBF and IBO titles.
After a four year lay off, following his 2005 defeat against former WBO champion Scott Harrison, the 35-year-old returned to ring in August when he defeated Mark Alexander in four rounds.
If the match up gets the green light Lawton hopes it will be granted eliminator status for the British featherweight crown, which is currently held by Dagenham's Kevin Mitchell.

Amir Khan: Will not do battle with Facebook

AMIR Khan has not told his lawyers to take legal action against Facebook.
It was claimed yesterday the Bolton boxer and his promoter Frank Warren had instructed solicitors to contact Facebook over “racist comments” on the site. But Amir’s manager Asif Vali and his lawyer Robert Davies both told The Bolton News the reports were wrong.
Amir’s solicitor Mr Davies said: “It was wrong reported. Mr Khan has not appointed solicitors to take legal action against Facebook, nor does he have any intention of doing so. We will be seeking rectification in relation to any previous articles.”
But Mr Warren’s legal team did make a ailment against the website over material relating to the promoter.
Specialist media lawyer Stephen Taylor-Heath said he had contacted Facebook on behalf of Mr Warren but said violative material about Amir had been removed from the website.
He said: “Amir Khan was caught up in the matter because there was material on the website that was very unpleasant but the complaint was made on behalf of Frank Warren.”
Facebook said in a argument that there was no place for derogatory substance on its site and that any offensive material would be removed.

By Tom Stokes: Its seems that Amir Khan (21-1, 15 KO’S) has threaded the eye of the needle, at least for now anyway, Khan who disappointment Andriy Kotelnik (31-3, 13 KO’s) on a lopsided agreed decision in July for the WBA light welterweight championship, was now assumed to fight either number 1 ranked mandatory contender Dmitriy Salita (30-0-1, 16 KO’s), or acting champion Marcos Maidana (26-1, 25 KO’s), but its seems now that a both contenders may be fighting each other in November of this year.

This must be a relief for Khan who didn’t seem to greedy at a clash with Maidana a knockout artist whose only loss came via a frarmented decision to Kotelnik, and who recently knocked out Victor Ortiz (24-2, 19 KO’s) to cause an upset. Roach mentioned that he didn’t want Khan getting in the ring with the big punching Maidana probably afraid of Khan getting suddenly knocked out like he did against Breidis Prescott (21-1, 18 KO’s).
Salita khan’s mandatory challenger is also a threat to khan, he’s a softer puncher than Maidana but he’s still a slick boxer and would believable show khan a thing or two in the ring. But it seems as though Salita has decided that he’s not getting anywhere chasing khan so he might as well go after the temporary title and someone who’s willing to give him a shot.
If the proposed fight does take place then khan can take a breather, but sooner or later he will have to face the winner, or he could abandon his title something I heard he might do if the WBA make him fight Maidana, but whoever khan fights next, I’m sure they will be tailor made for Khan to use his in-out portective (not so exciting) style opposed them, and we can thank frank warren as well for providing the cherry picked opponent, but this won’t help him in the long run, khan’s going to have to get in the ring with the big boys soon.

Amir Khan has established for the first time that he wants a "tear-up" with Ricky Hatton, having recently denied he had any intention of fighting the 30-year-old former two-weight world champion.

Khan, who makes a first challenge for a world title when he fights Andreas Kotelnik for his WBA light-welterweight belt on 27 June at the O2 Arena, London, said last month that he would rather have Hatton "in my corner supporting me than being in the opposite corner", adding: "I don't want to separate the friendship we have had for years."

"It'd be a brilliant fight for the British fans to see," said Khan. "Our styles would make a brilliant fight – I'm a mover, I'm a boxer whereas he [Hatton] is a pressure fighter. No matter what, if we do the fight it's going to be a tear-up, it's going to be brilliant.

"But we leave picking the fights and everything to the promoters. If the fight does come up one day then it comes. But if not, it doesn't really bother me 'cos there will be huge fights in the future."

Those, according to Khan, include a gathering with Floyd Mayweather Jr, who is making a comeback on 18 July against the Mexican Juan Manuel Márquez.

Those two men will meet at a catchweight of 143lbs, just three pounds heavier than Khan's square-up with Kotelnik.

"These guys already know who I am," he added. "I haven't hit my zenith yet but in a couple more combats I believe I'll be at my peak and I'll be getting practice. I'm in the right camp, the right gym where I can pick that up from. So it'd be great to fight these tradition in the game."

Amir Khan was due to challenge for Kotelnik's WBA Light-welterweight title in London on Saturday June 27, but the battle has now been reorganized for Saturday July 18.
The battle will take place at the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena.
Khan said: "I'm delighted that the fight is still on, and when 18 July comes I will never be more ready for him although, the postponement is a pain.
Khan added: "I was looking forward to headlining at the O2 Arena again as I have a lot of fans in London.
"I always get a great reception there so hopefully I can go back sometime soon, maybe for my first defence.

In early 2009, it was declared that Khan would fight past seven-time and three-weight world champion Marco Antonio Barrera on 14 March 2009 at the Manchester Evening News Arena. Frank Warren supportrf Khan's fight against the veteran Barrera, maybe Khan's highest-profile opponent to date. Barrera was ranked #1 and Khan #9 in the WBO world lightweight rankings. Previous IBF and WBO world lightweight title holder Nate Campbell was naked of the belts after moving up to the light welterweight division and Khan's promoter Frank Warren and Barrera's promoter Don King entrance hall the WBO to elevate the Khan-Barrera fight to a world lightweight title eliminator. However, the world-title status was instead given to the fight between Juan Manuel Márquez and Juan Diaz, ranked #2 and #3 in that order by the WBO.
On 14 March at the MEN Arena Manchester, England, Khan beaten Barrera after the fight was stopped towards the end of the 5th round due to Barrera pain a severe cut reopened from his previous fight. This was caused by a clash of heads late in the opening round. With Barrera deemed in no position to fight on by the ringside doctor, the fight went to the scorecards where Khan was ahead on all three (50-44, 50-45, 50-45).
Frank Warren was sufficiently impressed with Khan's performance that he vowed to land a world title fight for him before the end of the year.
"There was a lot on his shoulders, but I always felt he could rise to the big occasion. I'd like to see him get a belt round his waist by the end of this year."

In early 2009, it was declared that Khan would fight past seven-time and three-weight world champion Marco Antonio Barrera on 14 March 2009 at the Manchester Evening News Arena. Frank Warren supportrf Khan's fight against the veteran Barrera, maybe Khan's highest-profile opponent to date. Barrera was ranked #1 and Khan #9 in the WBO world lightweight rankings. Previous IBF and WBO world lightweight title holder Nate Campbell was naked of the belts after moving up to the light welterweight division and Khan's promoter Frank Warren and Barrera's promoter Don King entrance hall the WBO to elevate the Khan-Barrera fight to a world lightweight title eliminator. However, the world-title status was instead given to the fight between Juan Manuel Márquez and Juan Diaz, ranked #2 and #3 in that order by the WBO.
On 14 March at the MEN Arena Manchester, England, Khan beaten Barrera after the fight was stopped towards the end of the 5th round due to Barrera pain a severe cut reopened from his previous fight. This was caused by a clash of heads late in the opening round. With Barrera deemed in no position to fight on by the ringside doctor, the fight went to the scorecards where Khan was ahead on all three (50-44, 50-45, 50-45).
Frank Warren was sufficiently impressed with Khan's performance that he vowed to land a world title fight for him before the end of the year.

Amir Khan must not underestimate tough Ukranian Kotelnik

Make no mistake about it - Amir Khan´s July 18th challenge for Andriy Kotelnik´s WBA junior welterweight title at Manchester’s M.E.N Arena is no forgone conclusion. 22 year old Khan will start as a firm favorite to win his first world title, but the Hamburg based Ukrainian is tough and durable, with a wealth of experience both as an amateur and a pro.

We UK fight fans know all about young hotshot Amir Khan, the good-looking kid from Bolton who fights like a young Oscar De La Hoya. We know how he seems huge at his weight, dwarfing all of his opponents, and overpowering them with a relentless combination of speed and power.

We also suspect, but don’t like to dwell on, the possibility that his chin might be less than concrete..

Just two fights ago, Khan was knocked out in 54 seconds by the oddly named but vicious punching Colombian Breidis Prescott. By any reckoning, this was a crushing setback. Khan appeared to have a serious flaw in his boxing makeup, one that would hamper his aspirations of reaching the very top.

Let´s take a closer look at what happened that night less than a year ago in Manchester.

Both fighters came out fast, gloves held high. Both men are tall for lightweights, but Khan looks much bigger than Prescott.

Twenty seconds into the fight, Prescott catches Khan high on the temple with a scything left hook. From that moment on, the fight is effectively over; Khan’s equilibrium is completely shot, and from there on in he is fighting on instinct.

Look at the amount of leverage Prescott gets on the punch before it connects. That punch would have finished off any lightweight in the world.

Amir Khan desperately needs to win the WBA belt, a title that is in effect a key to a private club that has names like Pacquiao, Hatton, Cotto, Mosley and Mayweather as it´s exclusive membership. This fight should be highly competitive and surprisingly close, but with Freddy Roach in his corner, AKhan will grab the first of what could be many world titles.

Amir Khan will get his first chance at a world title on 27 June when he fights WBA light-welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnik in Britain.

The 22-year-old from Bolton defeated Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera in their lightweight contest in Manchester last month.

But he will move up a division to take on Germany-based Ukrainian Kotelnik at an as-yet undecided venue.

"To fight for the world title in only my 22nd fight is fantastic," said Khan.

"This is the best news that I could have received. Frank (Warren, promoter) has done a great job getting the world title fight for me in Britain and now I have to go out and win it."I've seen Kotelnik a few times and I've always been impressed by him but once my trainer Freddie Roach works out the game plan to beat him it's my job to execute it on the night, as I did effectively against Barrera."

Following his knockout defeat by Breidis Prescott last September, Khan's hopes of a world title fight seemed a distant hope.

However, the performance against Barrera, which saw him win courtesy of a fifth-round technical stoppage, has put him back on track.

Most of his campaigning until now has been in the lightweight division where he won the Commonwealth, WBO and WBA intercontinental titles but he beat Rachid Drilzane for the IBF intercontinental light-welterweight title in December 2006 in London.Kotelnik, who won Olympic lightweight silver at the 2000 Games in Sydney, four years before Khan did the same in Athens, has fought in Britain three times previously.

His first fight, in 2005, saw him beaten by Junior Witter in a European light-welterweight title fight.

In 2007 he held then WBA World Champion Souleymane M'Baye to a draw and last year he beat Gavin Rees to win the WBA crown.

Almost eighteen years later, his son has become a boxing prodigy and is well on the way to becoming a household name. But how did he get there? Here's some inside knowledge on our little hero.

Amir Khan first got into boxing at the tender age of eight. He was a hyperactive child and, according to his father, "a born fighter", as he was always getting into fights, at school. To help curb this, his father took him to Haliwell Boxing Club. From there he moved onto Bury Amateur Boxing club, where Mick Jelley coached him.
